SUNSHINE DARTS AT BREAN SANDS. Written
by Robert Holmes - 12th June 2013.
It was a sunshine weekend at Pontin's Brean Sands for the BDO International Open - both weatherwise and darts-wise!
On the oche, darts history was made when Claire Stainsby and Glen Durrant recorded the first ever 9-Dart 501 in Mixed Pairs competition. Glen 177, Claire 180, Glen 144. T20 T20 D12. They went on to be eventual runners-up to Garry Thompson and Deta Hedman who won the 2013 Mixed Pairs title.
To complete a memorable weekend, Claire and Glen won the Mixed Triples with Tony Eccles.
In the Youth Singles Semi-Finals, the very impressive 14 year-old JORDAN SINGH beat JOE DAVIS 3-1 , and 16 year-old CASEY GALLAGHER, the only girl in the Youth Singles, triumphed 3-2 over JOSH McCARTHY to reach the final.
And what a final it turned out to be for young Jordan who hit a 180 in the 1st leg and then checked out on 116. Another 180 came in the 4th leg as he was eventually crowned 2013 Youth Singles Champion 3-1.
Both he and Casey plus all the youngsters who competed are real talents for the future of BDO darts.
In the Women's Singles Semi-Finals the in- form DETA HEDMAN beat Welsh favourite JULIE GORE 4-2 and TRINA GULLIVER beat RACHEL BROOKS 4-1 to set up an exciting final.
In the final, Deta hit a 180 in the 2nd leg and had 81 left after 9 darts, but the doubles deserted her. However, Trina had to wait for her first 180 until the 7th leg when Deta was 4-2 up. The Dark Destroyer eventually retained her 2012 BDO International Open title with a 5-2 win.
In the Men's Singles the only Dutchman left in the competition, JAN DEKKER beat Scotland's JOHN GOLDIE 5-3 in the Semi-Finals, and reigning Lakeside World Champion SCOTT WAITES raced into another major final with a 5-1 Semi-Final triumph over JAMIE HUGHES.
In the final, Scott's high-scoring form deserted him as Jan powered into a 3-0 lead, but with a brilliant 124 checkout Scott made it 3-1 and then hit a 180 in the next only to see it matched by Jan who went 4-1 up and then 5-1 before Scott pulled in back to 5-3.
But it was too little too late as the rampant Double-Dekker went on to win the final 6-3 in convincing style.

LAKESIDE 2014 TO BE INCREASED TO 40 MEN AND 16 WOMEN. Written
by Robert Holmes - 28th January 2013.
The 2014 Lakeside World Professional Darts Championships will be played from Saturday, January 4th to Sunday, January 12th, 2014 and will be bigger and better than ever!
The largest ever field of 40 Men and 16 Women will be competing for the most prestigious titles in World Darts.
The first three World Professional Championships from 1978 to 1980 were contested by just 16 Men, but from 1981 to 2013 the field was 32 Men. The Women's World Championship was introduced by the BDO in 2001 and has always been contested by 8 Women. Now it is being increased to 16 Women from the 2014 Lakeside World Professional onwards.
"This is a significant, exciting and progressive step forward", says BDO Tournament Director Wayne Williams. "Not only does it illustrate the global increase in the higher standards of BDO and WDF players, but it also satisfies the growing TV audiences created by TV coverage from BBC, ESPN and Europsort.
"Needless to say, we are delighted to be providing even more valuable opportunities for our players - men and women - as we move the BDO forward and enhance the most prestigious Championships in world darts".
The additional 8 Men for the 2014 World Pro will earn their places from competition within the worldwide regions of the WDF: Australia, New Zealand, Canada, Eastern Europe, Western Europe, Asia, Baltic & Scandinavia and the USA. All have regional ranking tables which are accessible on the BDO website from the Tables drop-down menu.
The remaining 32 players will come from the BDO Invitational Table, the World Professional International Play-Offs and include the Winmau World Masters Champion if not already qualified.
The 16 Women will come from the BDO Invitation Table, the World Professional International Play-Offs and include the Winmau World Masters Champion if not already Qualified.
The BBC contract for the BDO Lakeside World Professional Darts Championships has been extended by three years up to an including 2016.
Winmau and the BDO Celebrate 40th Anniversary at Lakeside! Written
by Robert Holmes - 25th January 2013.
For Winmau and the British Darts Organisation (BDO) life certainly begins at 40!
2013 is the 40th anniversary year of the BDO, and Winmau have been proud supporters of the BDO since its inception in 1973.
2013 also marks the 40th anniversary year of the Winmau World Masters in October, and Winmau and the BDO wanted to celebrate these amazing milestones with a bang!
Winmau have produced a unique version of their Blade 4 dartboard to celebrate the BDO’s 40 years at the forefront of the sport. This was presented to Sue Williams, Chairperson of the BDO, by Ian Flack, Sales and Marketing Director of Winmau, on the hallowed Lakeside stage.
Winmau and the BDO also announced a new initiative during Lakeside 2013 – the launch of the Winmau 9 Dart Club, with membership restricted to BDO players who hit the magic 9 Dart 501 in BDO and WDF majors and opens.
To mark this new initiative, Winmau have produced a commemorative set of darts for two players who have achieved the impressive feat in tournaments sponsored by the darts giant. The first was presented to John Walton, who recorded the first and only 9 dart 501 in the Winmau World Masters in 2007, and his darts were presented to him at the player’s luncheon at Lakeside 2013.
More recently Christian Pratt hit a 9 darter in the 2012 BDO Winmau British Classic and, like John, will receive a unique set of Winmau laser-etched tungsten darts in a laser-etched aluminium presentation case as a permanent keepsake.
"Winmau wanted to produce something special to add to the celebrations for the BDO's 40th anniversary year" says Ian Flack, "and what could be better than a personalised Blade board and the launch of a new exclusive 9 Dart Club with a commemorative set of darts in a presentation case (both uniquely laser-etched with the exclusive 9 Dart Club logo and player’s name). Our relationship with the BDO has spanned four decades and we can’t thank them enough for all they have done, and continue to do, for our sport.”
Sue Williams commented: "We are proud of our long and valued relationship with Winmau, and it is fitting that the BDO's 40th Anniversary Year also marks the same anniversary for the Winmau World Masters, the oldest established major on the BDO calendar. The BDO and Winmau represents the greatest 'double' in the history of world darts and we are delighted to be celebrating together throughout 2013."
