BIGGEST EVER ENTRY FOR BDO BRITISH OPEN AT THE SPA, BRIDLINGTON

The Spa, Bridlington will welcome its biggest ever entry of darts players for the 2008 BDO British Open Men’s and Women’s Singles on Saturday, September 20th.

There will be a grand total of 626 men in the opening line-up, which is up 150 players and represents a massive 25% year on year increase. Entries for the Women’s Singles takes the grand total to 800 players – which means that there will be 798 competitive darts matches in one day of world-class darts at The Spa!

This includes the top players contesting the first ever BDO International Grand Prix, and will bring the series of five BDO tournaments to an exciting climax at The Spa  – with the final eight in the Men’s Singles being seen live and exclusively on Setanta Sports from 7PM to 12.30AM.

Over one-hundred Yorkshire players will be competing, including England Internationals, Martin Atkins, John Boy Walton (2001 Lakeside World Pro Champion) and Scott Waites, currently the highest placed Yorkshireman in the BDO International Grand Prix Series with 15 points.

The 2008 BDO British Open Men’s Singles Champion will receive a cheque for £3,000, but there is a further £32,000 on offer in the BDO International Grand Prix – including a winners cheque for £12,000.

The leading contenders will all be at The Spa:

  • Gary Anderson (Scot) on 33 points
  • Ross Montgomery (Scot) 24 points
  • Davy Richardson (Eng) 18 points
  • Scott Waites (Eng) 15 points
  • Gary Robson (Eng) and Mark Webster both on 9 points.

In addition to the home countries of England, Scotland and Wales, there will be players from a further eight countries competing in the Singles  – Germany, The Netherlands, Czechoslovakia, France, Switzerland, Slovakia, Sweden and Russia – all descending on Bridlington for a long weekend of darts from September 19 to 21 at The Spa.

There will also be eleven BDO Lakeside World Professional and Winmau World Masters Champions competing in the Men’s and Women’s British Open Singles:

TED HANKEY (Eng), JOHN WALTON (Eng), MARTIN ADAMS (Eng), reigning Lakeside World Pro Men’s Champion MARK WEBSTER (Wales) and reigning Lakeside Women’s World Pro Champion ANASTASIA DOBROMYSLOVA (Russia), seven times Lakeside Women’s World Pro Champion and five times Winmau Women’s World Masters Champion TRINA GULLIVER (Eng), KARIN KRAPPEN (Neth), FRANCIS HOENSELAAR (Neth) and ANNE KIRK (Scot), KAREN LAWMAN (Eng) and PETER EVISON (Eng).

Non participating spectators are welcome on Saturday, September 20th for an entrance fee of £9, which entitles them to approx fourteen hours of competitive darts, including the opportunity to be part of the Setanta Sports TV audience from  7PM to 12.30AM.
